Are Gaming Monitors Good For Work?
If you're on the hunt for the best gaming monitor, you've likely asked yourself if they are good for work also.
And you wouldn't be alone in asking, as it's rare nowadays that people buy monitors for single usage, especially as they can tip the scales in the price department.
So if you're on the fence about your next purchase, here are a few things to keep in mind, based on the type of work you may want to use your monitor for.
For Designers
The number question you'll want to ask yourself is if your work includes a lot of design. Are you spending hours editing photos or even creating CAD drawings? If so, then you'll want to pay attention to the colour accuracy of the monitor.
The reason being is that while some gaming monitors have a high level of colour accuracy, there are specific monitors made to replicate colour in the most accurate way possible, and they can save you a lot of time and hassle when it comes to working.
Some of the best monitors for video editing will have these qualities, but even with IPS displays being the norm nowadays with gaming monitors, they won't hold a candle to a design-focused display.
For Video Editors
As mentioned, many of the best monitors for video editing have high levels of colour accuracy, but when it comes to moving images, high refresh rates can lend a hand in creating an overall smoother viewing experience.
Many gaming monitors are characterised by their 144hz - 240hz refresh rates, and while there is a debate as to whether high refresh rates matter in gaming, we'd say that having the option to view the video in 60fps and above is certainly helpful on the day-to-day.
Typically, you can find excellent 4K displays which run at 60hz, or if you prefer to edit in 1080p you can find displays at 144hz and above easily.
Video editing tends to be a little easier on ultrawide monitors, which is where you may come into some issues if you're planning on gaming on one, as both xbox series x and ps5 don't officially support ultrawide settings.
For video editing, we'd say go for a decent 4K 60hz display on the larger side to get the best of both worlds.
For Writers
If you want to have a decent writing experience, go for a higher resolution monitor. Writing on a 4K display is much easier on the eyes in our opinion and most gaming monitors will do the job well.
For writing, you don't typically need a huge display (I'm working on a 27" AOC 4K monitor right now), so it's worth considering this if you plan on going for one of the 32" plus monitors on the market.
We recommend looking for an IPS display so you get the most out of the viewing angles and colour too.
Are Gaming Monitors Good For Work?
On the whole, yes they are, but if your work is design-heavy you may be missing out on some quality of life features.
For most people, a standard 4K 60hz monitor will more than do the trick for both gaming and work.
