Boo Mushroom

The Boo Mushroom turns Mario into a Boo and gives him some of their abilities.

These include floating through walls and flying.

Whilst in Boo form, Mario attracts other Boos to him and if touched by one he will change back into Mario.

Another way to turn make into his normal form is by Mario going into a light beam.

The Boo Mushroom appears in the Ghostly Galaxy, as well as the Sand Spiral Galaxy and Boo's Boneyard Galaxy.

Bee Mushroom

The Bee Mushroom is a yellow mushroom with brown stripes.

This power-up can first be found in the Honeyhive Galaxy.

Once found, Mario becomes a Bee Mario and will be able to fly, climb honeycomb walls, stand on flowers and clouds or cling to the Queen Bee.

If Mario touches water which is Bee form he will revert back to his normal state.

It appears in the Honeyclimb Galaxy, Gold Leaf Galaxy, Sea Slide Galaxy and Sand Spiral Galaxy.

Spring Mushroom

The Spring Mushroom is a metallic mushroom which looks similar to a spring.

When used, Mario will have a spring around him and will become Spring Mario.

He can bounce instead of walking and also Wall Jump, but he can't run.

Spring Mario jumps higher and if timed properly when he hits the ground he will do a high jump.

If he touches water, a Sling Star or a Launch Star, Mario will turn back into his normal self.

It can be found in the Toy Time Galaxy as well as in the Matter Splatter Galaxy and during the Beach Bowl Galaxy's Purple Coin challenge.

Ice Flower

Ice Flowers turn Mario into Ice Mario.

He can throw Ice Balls, which can freeze enemies.

In this state, he can travel across bodies of water and lava.

He can also freeze waterspouts and waterfalls, meaning he can reach higher points.

Fire Flower

Fire Flowers, sometimes known as Flame Flowers, is a power-up that can be found inside blocks.

Using one will turn Mario into Fire Mario.

In this form, he can throw fireballs, light torches and more.

The power-up lasts 20 seconds, unlike other games Mario can take damage in this state and still stay in it.

The Fire Flower appears in the Freezeflame Galaxy as well as the Ice Flower (see above).

It also makes an appearance in the Dusty Dune Galaxy, Deep Dark Galaxy and Snow Cap Galaxy.

Red Star

The Red Star is only available in Super Mario Galaxy.

It's like a red Grand Star and contains the power of the Red Lumas.

If used, Mario will turn into Flying Mario, as you may have worked out, he can now fly.

It also gives the player a gravitational pull when they spin, which will pull in nearby Star Bits and Coins.

Red Stars don't have a huge use in Super Mario Galaxy, they are using to complete a Purple Coin challenge in the Gateway Galaxy.

Other than that they can be used in the Comet Observatory for exploration.

Rainbow Star

The Rainbow Star is Super Mario Galaxy's version of the Super Star.

When collected, Mario will turn into Rainbow Mario.

In this state, he becomes invincible, drops Star Bits by damaging enemies, can break through certain objects, runs faster and can jump further and higher.

The music and Mario's speed will slow down as the power-up wears off.

The only place a Rainbow Star can be found is in The Golden Chomp.
